Essential Apps for Living in Malaysia: A Focus on Wise

With the strengthening of the Malaysian Ringgit, many Koreans living in Malaysia might find it less burdensome to send money back to Korea. 

 

If you look at the exchange rates over the past three months, the KRW/MYR rate has risen from 288 KRW to 305 KRW. 

 

 

Many of those with extra funds have likely taken advantage of this and sent money back to Korea.

However, for those who are relatively new to living abroad or who are hearing about the Wise app for the first time, I'd like to introduce you to this incredibly useful tool today.

Wise is a globally recognized money transfer app, and among Koreans living in Malaysia, it's one of the most popular choices for sending money to Korea. The app supports over 40 different currencies.

One of the things that continually amazes me is the speed of transactions with Wise. When I send money from South Korean Won (KRW) to Malaysian Ringgit (MYR), I usually use the Moin app. With Moin, it typically takes one or two days for the money to arrive. However, with Wise, the transfer happens in just a few seconds—except on weekends, of course. You can often see the money in your account on the same day!

Because of this, whenever I need to send money, I always choose Wise. :)

Oh, and for those living in Malaysia, it's worth noting that there are limits on the amount you can send. You can't send more than 30,000 MYR, and the maximum transfer amount to Korea as an individual is 5 million KRW.

 

 

Among the money transfer apps that are commonly used by Koreans in Malaysia, MoneyMatch and Wise are two of the most popular. I've tried both, and while MoneyMatch sometimes takes a day or so to deposit the money, Wise does it almost instantly, which is why I prefer using Wise.
