Hi Morning

Yesterday, there was a debation for the presidential election in Pennsylvania.

Let me try to highlight the main topics they dealt with in the debation, and differentiate what opinion they stick to.

1. Immigration

Kamala Harris: Harris criticized Trump’s immigration policies, referring to his large rallies. She mocked the idea that people leave Trump’s rallies early due to boredom and fatigue, suggesting that his support base is weakening. Through this, Harris aimed to highlight that Trump’s policies are no longer widely supported by many people.

Donald Trump: Trump, instead of presenting specific immigration policies, focused on defending the size of his rallies. He argued that his rallies are still well-attended and actively held, countering Harris’ critique. However, he didn’t offer substantial explanations or new visions on immigration.

2. Economy

Kamala Harris: Harris criticized Trump’s blanket tariff policies, calling them the “Trump sales tax,” and argued that his economic policies burdened the middle and lower classes. She also criticized Project 2025, a Republican plan for a future administration, arguing that it would harm ordinary people.

Donald Trump: Trump actively defended his tariff policies, emphasizing that the Biden administration has kept many of the tariffs from his presidency, which shows their validity and necessity. However, when Harris attacked him over the economy and inflation, Trump focused more on defending his tariffs rather than offering concrete solutions to current economic challenges.

3. Abortion

Kamala Harris: Harris strongly criticized Trump’s abortion policies, pointing to the difficulties faced by women in many states where “Trump abortion bans” have been implemented. She especially highlighted cases of women facing pregnancy complications who couldn’t access abortion care. Harris emphasized her support for women’s right to choose, contrasting herself with Trump, and used this issue to widen her double-digit lead over him.

Donald Trump: Trump defended his stance on abortion, arguing that the overturning of Roe v. Wade was what Americans wanted. However, polling doesn’t support this claim, and Trump struggled to provide a coherent argument, often veering off-topic and lacking specifics.

4. Foreign Policy

4.1 Afghanistan Withdrawal

Kamala Harris: Harris attacked Trump’s negotiations with the Taliban, particularly criticizing his efforts to invite Taliban leaders to Camp David. She argued that these negotiations complicated the Afghanistan withdrawal, emphasizing the disarray in Trump’s foreign policy.

Donald Trump: Trump did not directly defend his role in the Afghanistan withdrawal. He didn’t claim that his negotiations with the Taliban had a positive impact on the process, nor did he provide a substantial rebuttal to Harris’ accusations. Instead, Trump appeared to avoid the issue and didn’t assertively claim responsibility for overseeing the withdrawal.

4.2 China and Foreign Economic Policy

Kamala Harris: Harris criticized Trump’s China policy and tariffs, arguing that his trade war destabilized the global economy and that his tariff policies had negative effects on the U.S. economy.

Donald Trump: Trump defended the trade war with China and his tariff policies, claiming that they benefited the American economy. He emphasized the need for a strong stance against China and criticized the Biden administration, including Harris, for taking a weaker approach toward China.

4.3 Middle East Policy

Kamala Harris: Harris accused Trump of causing chaos in the Middle East. She particularly criticized his decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, arguing that this destabilized the region and posed a threat to security.

Donald Trump: Trump highlighted the withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal as one of his key foreign policy achievements. He argued that pulling out of the deal was essential for protecting the safety of the U.S. and its allies.

5. Who was the winner?

Based on the analysis of the debate, Kamala Harris seemed to have the upper hand in this particular encounter. She effectively put Donald Trump on the defensive multiple times, especially on issues like immigration, abortion, and the economy. Her strategy of directly attacking Trump's policies and forcing him to defend his past conduct seemed to work well, as Trump often diverted into defending the size of his rallies or past decisions rather than presenting new policies or ideas.

Harris also excelled in foreign policy, especially when criticizing Trump's Afghanistan withdrawal and his dealings with the Taliban, making him appear unprepared to counter her points. She managed to stay on message and remained composed, which contrasted with Trump's more defensive posture.

However, debates can be subjective, and opinions may vary based on political views, but from a strategic standpoint, Harris' approach appeared to be more effective in this instance.
